A Passive Monitoring Station is simply a series of filters extended above the forest canopy that absorbs the air rather than drawing the air in. These passive filters are placed in remote locations to help us determine the dispersion of pollutants and their concentrations. Passive filters are collected by helicopter periodically and are sent to a lab for analysis. The pollutants collected include ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and hydrogen sulphide.

We currently operate twenty seven passive monitoring stations. Four are located at MacKay River near Petro-Canada; three located at our ambient air monitoring stations (AMS 1 - Fort McKay, AMS 6 - Patricia McInnes, and AMS 14 - Anzac); eleven are dispersed in the forests of the region; and nine are dispersed around the lakes of the region.
