Welcome to WBEA.org. We operate the largest airshed in the largest municipality in the country. We are committed to monitoring air quality on behalf of all the people who live and work in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. We do it in a spirit of cooperation with all parties and with the best interest of the citizens of our region always in mind.

What is WBEA?

  • A dynamic collaboration of communities, environmental groups, industry, government and Aboriginal stakeholders.
  • An integral component of Alberta Environment regulatory compliance for member companies.
  • Operates one of the most air quality monitoring networks in North America.
  • WBEA has the most extensive ambient air network in Alberta with 14 air monitoring stations and 14 passive monitoring stations to date.
  • Reports continuous ambient air quality data, in real time, directly to our website (click on data menu).
  • Monitoring programs include Air, Land and Human Exposure.
  • Operates in an area where the main industry is oil sands development.
  • Engages stakeholders in the work of the WBEA and increases interaction with the public through open houses, newsletters, radio, newspaper, school presentations, trade shows, science fairs, Environment Week and other special events.

From north central Alberta to the borders of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca) covers 68,454 square kilometres, making it one of the largest municipalities in North America. It was established in 1995, through an amalgamation of the City of Fort McMurray and Improvement District No. 143 and in 2004 had a population of 67,105.
