A Lichen Indicator Monitoring Pilot Program was initiated in 2002 to examine the effects of air emissions on lichens and lichen habitat. Lichens are a group of organisms that consists of fungus living in association with green algae or bacteria. Lichens inhabiting trees acquire most of their nutrients of from the air and as a result are good indicators of the potential effects of air emissions associated with oil sands mining. |
