The role of the Communications Committee is to convey to all those who live and work in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, information about their air quality in a way that is meaningful and relevant. The committee, chaired by Michele Toma, meets monthly to develop, and implement communications activities that foster understanding and awareness of WBEA’s work; more specifically, the projects being undertaken, why, and how the work is done, because it is after all, on behalf of those living in the region. That is the role of this committee, to communicate the important work WBEA does to the people who have a stake in the place they call home. There are various methods the committee uses such as newsletters, tradeshows, presentations to school youth, science fairs, advertising and so on. In addition to these, the WBEA also participates in joint initiatives with other organizations to help people understand, from a holistic perspective, how the environment is monitored and managed in our region. As important as communications is, so is the measuring of its effectiveness. That is why the committee has developed ways to measure its communications, such as surveys, so that we can engage and learn from stakeholders how to improve our efforts.
