Forest Health Meteorological Towers

The Purpose: To better understand site specific growing conditions, as well as exposure conditions, meteorological sensors above, within, and below the forest canopy as well as air quality monitors have been instrumented on 28-meter towers at two Forest Health Monitoring sites (i.e., jack pine sites). In addition, a mini-tower is established along the forest edge to determine potential early warning changes.
In 2010, US Forest Service Scientists participated in a field visit as well as a technical meeting to provide guidance on the tower placement. Information gathered from the US Forest Service scientists, coupled with a detailed review of the data collected from the sites was assessed. As a result, in 2011 some modification to the existing towers will be undertaken, as well as some instrument/design changes, to improve data quality collected from the sites.
In 2011 two additional towers as well as mini-towers will be established.
