Jack Pine Monitoring Plot Enhancement

The Purpose: The use of ecologically analogous sites for long-term monitoring is expected to minimize background noise due to stand history, soil chemistry, and ecosystem function while maximizing the environmental signal for industry emissions. The analogue concept will also enhance WBEA’s ability to separate change due to pollutant deposition from climate change and natural stand dynamics.
In 2010, field work was initiated in May and completed in September. Five more potential sites (north of the Clearwater and east of Athabasca River) were selected in 2010 to make the total number of 38 sites. Chemical analyses were completed to help evaluation on analogous sites. A technical review took place and inputs were provided on the selection of the sites for the 2011 field program.
