NH3 and HNO3 Regional Passive Monitoring

The Purpose: Gaseous nitric acid (HNO3) and ammonia (NH3) air contaminates are key components of the atmospheric dry deposition of Nitrogen to forests and other ecosystems. Monitoring results are used for development of geostatistical maps predicting distribution of pollutants in the AOSR.
The network of passive samplers has been operational since May 2005. For January-August 2010, average monthly concentrations measured at forest passive monitoring sites ranged from 0.8 – 2.3 ppb NH3, and 0.10 – 0.30 ppb HNO3. Average monthly concentrations measured using passive samplers co-located at continuous monitoring stations ranged from 1.70 – 4.30 ppb NH3 and 0.20 – 0.50 ppb HNO3. Both pollutants are characterized by their high spatial and temporal variability.
Passive monitoring will be continued in 2011. The TEEM Science Sub-Committee is currently reviewing the monitoring program to determine appropriateness of current monitoring locations.
