Stable Isotope
The Purpose: This project will determine if a quantifiable assessment can be made to differentiate between natural and anthropogenic N and S contributions to the environment. The project will establish to what extent stable isotope ratios can be used to trace the fate of emissions in the surrounding terrestrial environment.
Preliminary results indicate that stable isotopes can be derived from IER samplers. Assessment of stable isotopes was also carried out on soil, jack pine needle and lichen samples, collected in 2008. PRS probes for isotopic analyses were also taken in 2010. Preliminary results indicate that the isotope O17 may be the better isotope to measure in future monitoring work. Some additional samples from the stack/trucks will be added to the program in 2011.
